DESTINATION

DESTINATION

Faroe Islands

In the North Atlantic about 40 miles north of Scotland, between Greenland and Denmark lie the 18 islands that together form the Faroe Islands. The Faroe Islands, which were discovered by Irish monks as early as the 500s, belong to Denmark but are self-governed, which means that they have a local parliament and their own government, but foreign and defence policy is managed from Copenhagen. On the main island of Streymoy is the capital Torshavn where about 20,000 of the 48,000 inhabitants of the Faroe Islands live. The main income for the inhabitants comes from fishing, but tourism also employs many, as the landscape and wildlife of the islands attract many visitors each year. The nature of the Faroe Islands is dramatic with steep cliffs plunging straight down into the North Atlantic, green meadows stretching across the hilly landscape and steep mountains. This landscape and nature are perfect for the landscape photographer. The Faroe Islands have a rich bird life which includes puffins, three-toed gulls and the northern gannet. In addition to birds, there are also whales and seals with a good chance of getting them on photo. The weather in the Faroe Islands can change very quickly and rain and fog can turn to brilliant sunshine in a matter of moments. The day temperature in August is at around 10-13 degrees.

EYSTUROY
Eysturoy is reached from Streymoy via the bridge that is sometimes called the North Atlantic’s only bridge. During our visit to Eysturoy, we will climb the tallest mountain in the Faroe Islands, Slættaratindur. From its summit, at an altitude of 882 meters, we get a breath-taking view of all the islands, and we will have the opportunity for nice panoramic pictures. We will also visit several of Eysturoy’s picturesque and beautifully situated villages including Gjógv which is located at the edge of a water-filled ravine. Nearby is also Ambadalur where the 188-meter-high cliff Búgvin rises out of the sea and becomes a perfect motif for our pictures.

 VAGAR
Vagar is the third largest island of the Faroe Islands after Streymoy and Eysturoy and is one of the most westerly of the 18 islands. It is also here that the Faroe Islands’ only airport is located, and this is where our adventure in the Faroe Islands begins. On Vagar, we find Sørvágsvatn which is the largest lake in the archipelago and the waterfall Bøsdalafossur which flows down the steep cliffs and down into the North Atlantic. Both are perfect places for landscape photography. We will also visit the village of Gásadalur located in a dramatic landscape with a steep coastline that plunges straight into the North Atlantic. This, in combination with a mighty waterfall, forms an exciting motif for landscape photographers.

STREYMOY
Streymoy is the largest island of the Faroe Islands and this is where the majority of the island’s inhabitants live. It is also here that the capital of the archipelago, Torshavn, is located. Streymoy’s long and narrow landscape, like the other islands we visit, has dramatic and magnificent nature with deep ravines and steep cliffs. During our visit we will photograph the waterfall Fossá, which, at 140 meters, is the tallest waterfall in the Faroe Islands. The island is home to the oldest settlements in the Faroe Islands, and over the years ancient remains dating back to the Viking Age have been found here. We will visit the small and idyllic village of Saksun, which, with its 14 inhabitants, is beautifully surrounded by high mountains and waterfalls.
