WOLVES AND WILDCATS OF SPAIN

WITH PHOTOGRAPHER TOM SVENDSSON

Next year, you can join me in Spain to photograph the Iberian wolf, which is regularly found in the mountain ranges of northwestern Spain. Moreover, you won’t need to sit in hides to photograph the wolves, making it much easier to capture various angles in your pictures. As an added bonus, we will also photograph wildcats

Tom Svensson

Join us on a journey through the untouched nature of Spain and capture the fascinating wildlife that many are unaware of. Explore the heart of the Cantabrian Mountains with the aim of photographing the Iberian wolf, known as one of the best places in the world to photograph wild wolves without a hide, often getting as close as 100-150 meters. Seeing these beautiful animals in their natural habitat is a unique experience, and during the trip, we will also photograph European wildcats in one of the best areas on the Iberian Peninsula, observing them from hides. ITINERARY

ITINERARY

3-7 SEPTEMBER 2025

DAY 1, (Sept. 3) – ARRIVAL AND INTRODUCTION
We gather at the airport in Madrid, where you will be met by Tom Svensson and a host from Zoom Photo Tours. After approximately a four-hour drive through the beautiful Spanish countryside, we arrive at Tierra de la Reina Hotel near Riaño. The small community is beautifully situated right next to the mighty Riaño reservoir, which has a circumference of 100 kilometers. When the reservoir was built in the 1970s, no fewer than nine villages were submerged, and their inhabitants relocated to Nuevo Riaño – New Riaño. After checking in, it’s time for a welcome dinner and a presentation about the coming days and the photo adventure that awaits us. (D)

DAY 2-5, (Sept. 4-7) – WOLF AND WILDCAT PHOTOGRAPHY
During these days, we will explore the beautiful nature of northern Spain, focusing on photographing the Iberian wolf and wildcat. To encounter the wolves, we will hike and explore the hilly areas and valleys that make up the Cantabrian Mountains. Here, the chances of seeing and photographing wolves in the wild without hides are greatest, as the wolves often venture into the valleys. Together with Tom and our experienced tracker, we will keep a lookout, and although nothing is guaranteed with wild animals, wolf packs are regularly seen, sometimes from just 100-150 meters away. When photographic opportunities arise, Tom will be available to provide personal guidance, tips, and advice.

Our second main goal for the trip is to photograph wildcats, and the area we will be photographing in is considered to have the highest density of wildcats in Spain. With their experience and knowledge of the area, our trackers will lead us to the best spots for wildcat photography. It is not uncommon to see up to six cats a day, often from hides.
We will also have the opportunity to photograph griffon vultures and Egyptian vultures from hides.

When we are not photographing, we will review our pictures and work on photo editing, as well as receive constructive critique to take with us to the next photo session. Of course, we will also enjoy delicious Spanish food. (B, L, D)

DAY 6, (Sept. 8) – PHOTOGRAPHY AND DEPARTURE
In the morning, you will have yet another opportunity to encounter the Iberian wolf and use the knowledge you have gained over the days to take the last photos of the trip.At lunchtime, we will leave the hotel for transfer to Madrid airport for onward travel on your own. (B)
