WITH PHOTOGRAPHER SERKAN GÜNES

COUNTRY: Denmark    PHOTO TYPE Landscape    TRIP LENGTH: days    GROUP SIZE: 8-12 guests    DATES: April 25-28 2024

The world-renowned Skagen light is not a myth but an actuality in Skagen, located in northern Jutland. It is a landscape photographer’s dream to witness and capture the astonishing light as the sun descends over Europe’s largest migrating sand dune.

Serkan Günes

Everyone is talking about the world-famous Skagen light, but experiencing it is an entirely different matter. Just picture yourself standing amidst the heart of Europe’s largest migrating sand dune, as the sun gracefully descends, and the hues of the dunes shift from warm yellow to rusty purple. The possibilities for capturing breath-taking scenes seem endless. No matter which direction you choose to turn, there’s always something awaiting your lens. This is a truly unparalleled experience and a landscape photographer’s ultimate dream.

Under the guidance of the esteemed landscape photographer Serkan Günes, we will embark on a four-day journey capturing the essence of Skagen’s extraordinary locations. Serkan, one of our most accomplished landscape photographers, will provide invaluable assistance in bringing out that unique element in your photographs. Perhaps it will be the awe-inspiring crashing waves where the Skagerrak and Kattegat converge at Skagen’s headland, or the vast expanses of Europe’s largest migrating sand dunes at Råbjerg Mile. Alternatively, it might be the enchanting Skagen light, illuminating the mile-long sandy beaches along the coastline, or the church of Sct. Laurentii, where only the church tower emerges from the dunes.

TOUR HIGHLIGHTS

  • Skagen headland where Skagerrak and Kattegat meet.
  • Råbjerg Mile, the largest migrating sand dune in Europe.
  • The magical Skagen light at Råbjerg Mile.
  • The church Sct. Laurentii where only the tower is visible among the dunes.

TOUR ITINERARY

TOUR ITINERARY • APRIL 25-28, 2024

Attention! As the weather in the Faroe Islands is very varied and can change very quickly, the day programme will be determined on site based on weather and wind.

DAY 1, (25/8) – WELCOME TO SKAGEN
Meet up outside Stena Line’s ferry terminal in Fredrikshamn in connection with the ferry arriving at 12.40 p.m. Here you will be met by Serkan and a representative from Zoom Phototours for the onward journey towards Skagen, the northernmost city in Jutland, approx. 40 km north of Fredrikshamn. After checking in at the  Foldens Hotel where we will stay for three nights, we head out to photograph Skagen’s famous lights at some of the many dunes along the coast.

We end the day with a joint welcome dinner while getting to know each other. During dinner, Serkan will also tell you a little more about the coming days and give some general photo tips. (D)

DAY 2-3 (25-27/8) – PHOTOGRAPHY IN SKAGEN
During the upcoming two days, our itinerary will encompass the renowned locations that have immortalized Skagen’s fame, allowing us to capture photographs at various sites that inspired the Skagen painters and their interpretation of the extraordinary light. At Råbjerg Mile, we will be welcomed by Europe’s largest migrating sand dune. Since our visit to Skagen takes place early in the season, the sand remains pristine and untouched. Guided by Serkan’s expertise, we will seek out the natural patterns that emerge as the sand shifts. These patterns will guide the viewer’s gaze, leading them through the vast expanse of dunes towards the horizon, where the sky takes on a captivating hue of pink during the sunset.

As we venture through the remarkable highlights of Skagen, we soon find ourselves at Grenen, the northeasternmost point of Jutland. Here, the sea takes centre stage, offering us a completely different set of photographic opportunities compared to the ones we encountered at the Råbjerg Mile dunes. Standing at the furthest end of the headland, we are met with a mesmerizing spectacle. Waves collide and crash against each other from either side of the headland, showcasing the meeting point of the Skagerrak and Kattegat seas. On other parts of Grenen, we have the chance to experiment with longer shutter speeds, enabling us to capture striking images of the waves gracefully washing over the beaches.

If you are lucky, you may have the opportunity to capture photographs of seals gracefully gliding through the water or basking on the beaches. While the sand and sea provide a constant presence, Skagen is an area that offers a multitude of diverse photo opportunities. Further evidence of this can be witnessed at the church of Sct. Laurentii, where the sand dunes have claimed their dominance, leaving only the church tower protruding amidst the tower protruding amidst the sand dunes. (B, L, D)

DAY 4 (28/4) – PHOTOGRAPHY AND RETURN JOURNEY
In the morning, we embark on our final photo expedition in Skagen. Following our expedition, we gather to collectively choose the picture of the trip, which automatically qualifies for the final round of the prestigious Picture of the Year 2024 competition. Afterwards, we make our way back for the return journey, taking the ferry from Frederikshavn to Gothenburg, with the departure time set at 13.50. (B)
