SEABIRDS OF FARNE ISLANDS

WITH PHOTOGRAPHER DAVID TIPLING

COUNTRY: England    PHOTO TYPE: Birds   TRIP LENGTH: 4 days   GROUP SIZE: 8-12 guests   DATES: 4-7/7 2022   PRICE: £ 1095

Join Amateur Photographer magazine and award-winning photographer David Tipling to the Farne Islands, the most exciting seabird colony in the UK. This is a bird photographer’s paradise with more than 100,000 seabirds including spectacular puffin and tern colonies, terns, auks, kittiwakes, shags and eider ducks.

The Farne Islands host over one hundred thousand seabirds including one of the largest puffin colonies in Britain. Join David Tipling who has been visiting the Farne Islands annually for more than 30 years to photograph one of the world’s great bird spectacles. Nowhere else in Britain offers such close encounters with breeding seabirds, allowing you to get really creative with both composition and technique. David will be on hand so you can maximise those opportunities, passing on tips on how to take your bird photography to the next level. We are timing our visit to enjoy capturing images of returning puffins with beaks full of fish. The sheer numbers of birds on these islands is jaw dropping, so you can expect to shoot thousands of images. David, with his many years of experience of bird photography, will be there to help us get inspiration through personal guidance out in the field, lectures, and constructive criticism on your photos, giving you tips and advice on them.

FARNE ISLANDS

The Farne Islands lie two to three miles off the Northumberland coast midway between the fishing village of Seahouses and the magnificent Castle of Bamburgh. There are between 15 and 20 islands depending on the state of the tide. From April until the end of July, these islands are dominated by one of the most exciting seabird colonies in the United Kingdom with unrivalled views of 23 species, including around 40,000 pairs of puffins. The islands are also the permanent home for a large, and inquisitive, colony of Atlantic or grey seals. This is one of the top grey seal pupping sites in England, with more than 2,000 pups born at the islands every autumn/winter.

TOUR ITINERARY

TOUR ITINERARY

TOUR ITINERARY • July 4 – 7, 2022

DAY 1 – ARRIVAL & LECTURE
You will arrive in the afternoon and will be greeted by David Tipling and a host from Zoom Photo Tours at The Lindisfarne Inn in Beal. After checking in at our hotel David will give an inspiring lecture, showing us photos from some of the locations we will be visiting during the workshop as well as giving us his tips and advice on how to take photos in various conditions and at different times during the day. All this should inspire you to become better photographers. During all photo sessions David will be available for individual questions and at the same time help you to improve your photo skills. We will conclude our day with a welcome dinner at the hotel. (D)

DAY 2-3 – PHOTOGRAPH AROUND FARNE ISLANDS
During these two days we will take an all-day trip out to the islands, visiting Staple Island in the morning. Staple gives great opportunities to photograph kittiwakes and guillemots, razorbills and shags with chicks on the cliff ledges – this is a great location for taking wideangle shots of the colonies. Close to the quay puffins gather, often in their hundreds, and some will be carrying fish. Around 40,000 nesting pairs inhabit the islands. We can eat our packed lunch on the boat as we transfer to Inner Farne for the afternoon. This is the largest of the Farne Islands. During summer it becomes home for thousands of nesting seabirds including puffins, guillemots, razorbills, Arctic and sandwich terns.  Eider ducks nest here too but will have left the island by July. Photographic highlights on Inner Farne will include puffins returning to their nesting burrows with beakfulls of fish and we hope Arctic terns (they deserted the island in 2021 to nest elsewhere due to unfavourable conditions). When we are not out in the field photographing, we will work on editing, look at pictures and get feedback from David. (B, L, D)

DAY 3 – EDITING & DEPATURE
During the morning we will work on editing the pictures we have taken in the last few days on our computers and talk about our pictures together. David will sit with you and guide you on how to handle the images. After lunch David will appoint the best image of the trip, which will be presented in Amateur Photographer magazine. (B, L)
