DESTINATIONS

DESTINATIONS

AMBOSELI NATIONAL PARK

Amboseli National Park is located in the southern regions of Kenya, not far from the Tanzanian border. To the surface, the park is one of the smaller ones in Kenya, but there is plenty here to attract a keen photographer. In the varied surroundings we will encounter a rich wildlife with wildebeest, giraffes, lions, hyenas, antelopes, and zebras. But the main attraction of this park is the large herds of elephants, and a stunning view of the world’s tallest independent mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro, which reaches for the sky on the other side of the Tanzanian border. The mighty elephants combined with the majestic view of the mountain in the background, are all a photographer could wish for, and something that can’t be found anywhere else than in Amboseli.

COAST OF MOMBASA

Along the Mombasa coast you are met by a fantastic coastline with chalk white beaches, small villages and towns where we get the opportunity to photograph everyday life and capture the many moments that appear wherever we turn our cameras. Off the coast, the fishermen set sail in their simple wooden boats cutting through the crystal clear water. A whole new world opens up in the ocean where you are met by turtles, dolphins and thousands of fish.

TOUR ITINERARY

TOUR ITINERARY

FEBRUARY 19-27, 2022

DAY 1 – WELCOME TO KENYA AND AMBOSELI NATIONAL PARK.
In the morning we arrive at Nairobi, where we are met by our Zoom host and the local guides who will be with us in the days to come. From Nairobi, we travel by bus towards Amboseli National Park, for a few days full of unforgettable photo opportunities. On the way there, we will stop and photograph anything that catches our interest, and as we approach our lodge, it is important to have the camera at the ready as wild animals can show up at any time. Arriving at the lodge, we are welcomed by Philip Lee Harvey. After some rest, we gather for our first safari of the trip into Amboseli National Park. Back at the hotel, Philip will tell us more about what awaits us in the days to come, and what to consider during our safaris and our encounters with Africa’s amazing wildlife. After this, we will be served a lovely welcome dinner with a chance to get to know each other. (L, D)

DAY 2-5 – AMBOSELI NATIONAL PARK
We spend our days in one of Philip’s favorite places in Africa, Amboseli National Park. Early in the mornings we go out on safari. It at this time of day when the animals are at their most active, and in the fresh African morning air, we can see the sun slowly rise over  Kilimanjaro . With a bit of luck, we’ll find trails to follow, and who knows; we might be able to find a pride of lions munching down on their prey from a night of successful hunting. Our days are filled with photographic inspiration, and we will learn from and have a unique insight into how one of the top travel and advertising photographers in the world, work, we will work with everything from finding inspiration to how to plan a shoot,  If you have photographed Africa’s wildlife before, now is the time to take your photographic skills along new paths and to new levels. Philip will show that it’s not always about letting the main motif fill up the picture, but that a giraffe in the landscape with  Kilimanjaro as a backdrop, can be at least as interesting, and how the things you omit from the picture can be as important as what you choose to include. A large part of the mission of a travel photographer is to convey a sense of the location you visit, everything from the landscape to the animals and people. Therefore, during our days in Amboseli, we will visit one of the villages of the Masai people, to learn more about them, and photograph their everyday life and traditions, we will also shoot inside our resort and Philip who has photographed for some of the worlds top hotels and resorts will teach us who to capture the soul of the place.  While out on safari, we will have the opportunity of photographing the amazing wildlife of Amboseli, and with a little luck, the elephants with their huge tusks, that made the National Park world famous. Philip will rotate between our jeeps, so there is plenty of time for personal guidance, tips, and tricks. He will show you what to keep in mind when shooting for a spread with text, something that is as valuable for a story for Lonely Planet, as it is for designing your own photobook.  In addition to inspiring photography lectures, Philip will share fascinating stories and anecdotes from the areas we visit, sitting in front of the campfire after a day full of amazing photo opportunities and hearing about stories and animal encounters from the past, is a soothing way to end the day, before we fall asleep listening to all the sounds of the Savannah. (B, L, D)

DAY 6 – FLIGHT TO MOMBASA
After a final morning safari, we leave Amboseli behind to fly directly to the coastal town of Mombasa, where new photo adventures await us. When we land in Mombasa, we will check into our hotel, right on the Indian Ocean and enjoy the gorgeous view of the sea. Dinner is served at the hotel. (B, L, D)

DAY 7-8 – PHOTO ADVENTURES AROUND MOMBASA
During our days spent in and around Mombasa, we will explore the beaches and learn how to create a photographic narrative, but with completely different motifs and photo ingredients.  Here we are lured by the fishermen in their small wooden boats and their huge sails, the beautiful architecture and the small details that make up the whole. When we are not exploring with our cameras, we will work on image processing, have constructive discussions about the pictures we’ve taken and listen to inspiring lectures by Philip on everything from how to work with lighting to finding your own photographic style. What we learn during these lectures will be put into practice, and we will learn how to use the light and different times of day to create varied pictures, that convey different emotions to the viewer. During the days we spend by the Indian Ocean, Philip will give each of us an assignment, where we will create a narrative around a specific area with our pictures. During the last night of our amazing adventures, we will eat a final dinner together, and summarize all the experiences and memories for life that we bring with us home. In connection with our last dinner, Philip will appoint the “Best image of the trip” which will proceed to the finale of the contest “Image of the year, 2021”. (B, L, D)

DAY 9, – RETURN JOURNEY
Today it is time to leave Mombasa’s beautiful beaches behind, and after checking out, we make our way to the airport, for further transport on our own. (B)
