WILD INDIA

WITH PHOTOGRAPHER BEN HALL AND AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHER

India is a wildlife photographer’s paradise, and few experiences compare to the thrill of seeing a Bengal tiger in its natural habitat. This journey offers incredible opportunities to capture stunning images of these majestic cats, along with a wealth of other wildlife. I look forward to sharing my passion, knowledge, and techniques with you in some of India’s most breathtaking national parks.

Ben Hall

The motives are everywhere we turn our cameras, and perhaps we pause to photograph a troop of langurs leaping from branch to branch, making the foliage tremble. Our action-packed photography session is suddenly interrupted by a warning call that drowns out the jungle’s murmur and birdsong. We start the jeep and follow the alarm call as it slowly moves through the trees. The warning sounds come from a sambar deer, which most likely means that a tiger is in the vicinity.

After a moment of searching, we stop our jeep and wait in anticipation. After just a few minutes—and as if from nowhere—a tigress steps onto the road in front of us. She calmly looks around before slowly beginning to walk straight toward us—a photographic moment we will never forget.

Join Amateur Photographer and photographer Ben Hall on this readers photo trip filled with tiger photography as we visit three of India’s best national parks to see and photograph the Bengal tiger. During the trip, we will listen to inspiring lectures by Ben, have group photo reviews with constructive feedback, and receive personal guidance in the field as we explore the world of The Jungle Book.

DESTINATIONS

BANDHAVGARH TIGER RESERVE

Bandhavgarh National Park, one of the most well-known national parks in India, is located in the Vindhya Hills of the Umaria district in Madhya Pradesh. Declared as a national park in 1968, the Bandhavgarh National Park is spread across the area of 105 square kilometers. Due to varied topography, the Bandhavgarh National Park provides ample opportunity to spot the majestic Indian tiger and some rarely seen animals like leopard and sloth bear. Other wildlife in the park includes the Asiatic jackal, Bengal fox, gray mongoose, striped hyena and jungle cat. The artiodactyls frequently sighted are wild pigs, spotted deer, sambar deer, chausingha, nilgai, chinkara and gaur. There are also more than 250 species of birds in the park.

KANHA NATIONAL PARK

Kanha National Park, in Madhya Pradesh, is the core of the Kanha Tiger Reserve, which was created in 1974 under the Tiger project. A strict conservation program for overall protection of the park’s animals and plants makes Kanha one of the most well-managed national parks in Asia. In the park there are great possibilities to see several species of birds, monkey, deer, wild dogs and of course the king of the park – the Bengal tiger. It was the Kanha National Park that inspired Kipling’s classic saga, the Jungle Book.

PENCH NATIONAL PARK

Pench National Park is located in the state of Madhya Pradesh and is named after the Pench River that flows through the park from north to south. Its terrain, with a mix of open areas and cliffs, provides a perfect environment for many animals, particularly leopards. However, the park’s main attraction, just like other national parks in central India, is the Bengal tiger. The park is also home to jungle cats, wild dogs, wild boars, sloth bears, numerous monkeys, Indian bison, various deer species, and over 210 different bird species. In the park, 1,200 plant species have been registered, including several rare and endangered plants as well as plants of ethnobotanical significance.

DAY 1, (APRIL 12) – ARRIVAL
Arriving Nagpur International Airport, you will be met and greeted by Ben Hall and a host from Zoom Phototours. From the airport we continue to Pench and checking in at Tuli Tiger Corridor**** late afternoon. in the evening we enjoy  a nice welcome dinner before we go to bed surrounded by the sound of the jungle. (D)

DAYS 2-3, (APRIL 13-14) – SAFARI AT PENCH
As the sun is rising over the jungle we drive in through the gates of Pench National Park. Together with Ben and our knowledgeable drivers, we keep our eyes open to spot fresh paw prints on the road and other tracks that can bring us closer to our meeting with Pench elusive tigers. Great photo opportunities can show up when we least expect it and maybe we stop to capture a flock of monkeys that jump from branch to branch so the foliage shakes above our heads. Suddenly we are interrupted by a warning call that echoes through the jungle. We start the jeep and follow the loud calls that quickly moves between the trees. The warning call come from a sambar deer and are very likely to mean that a tiger is moving in the surroundings. We stop our jeep and quietly wait with excitement. After just a few minutes, as from nowhere, a majestic tiger steps out on the road in front of us. He turns his head and slowly begins to walk straight towards us as we capture some incredible photos and experience a wildlife encounter we will never forget.

In the afternoon we head out on the second safari of the day and together we do not only develop our photography skills, but also our knowledge about the many ecosystems we are in. When we drive through the parks hillier terrain, we look up towards the cliffs to see if the mysterious leopard might make an appearance before the golden evening light slowly fades away over the jungle. As the sun is setting behind the tree line we leave the park and return to our lodge where a great dinner awaits as well as image editing, photo talks and analysis of the images taken throughout the day. (B, L, D)

DAY 4, (APRIL 15) – PENCH TO KANHA
After a concluding safari followed by breakfast and check-out, we will head towards Kanha. When we arrive there will be time to relax by the pool and we will also work with editing the images we have got so far. (B, L, D)

DAY 5-6, (APRIL 16-17) – SAFARI IN KANHA
Every morning we have an early start, to head out on our safaris. With great anticipation, we jump into our jeeps for our first meeting with axis deer, Indian bison and hopefully the Bengal tigers. As we drive into the park, the fog is dense and the experience of slowly watching the sun rise over the open meadows, dotted with sambar deer, is hard to beat. When we slowly move into the forest we are met with a beautiful soft light as the morning sun filters through the foliage. Ben constantly share his great knowledge about the sounds of the jungle and the various photo opportunities that opens up in front of us.

With our memory cards filled, we return the lodge for a few hours of relaxation followed by lunch. In the afternoon, it’s time again to meet Kanha’s wildlife in the beautiful national park, which once was the source of inspiration for Kipling’s novel the Jungle Book in the late 1800s. With some luck, we may even be able to photograph Baloo, the very elusive lip bear. When the sun begins to sink towards the horizon, chances of seeing tiger increase, and with some luck we are able to photograph this majestic animal in the soft evening light. Back at the lodge we have dinner together before we edit our photos or listen to an inspirational talk by Ben. (B, L, D)

DAYS 7, (APRIL 18 ) – PENCH TO BANDHAVGARH
After a concluding safari followed by breakfast and check-out, we will head towards Bandhavgarh. When we arrive there will be time to relax by the pool and we will also work with editing the images we have got so far. (B, L, D)

DAY 8-9, (APRIL 19-20) – SAFARI IN BANDHAVGAH
Two days, we will spend in the Bandhavgarh jungle. Early in the morning we enter the National Park with great anticipation. We move between open grassland and compact jungle where langurs, placed high up in the trees, are busy scouting over the environment in order to warn the Sambars of potential threats. We are now in the most tiger frequent part of India. Few other places offer this good an opportunity to photograph the majestic predator.

Back again after the morning safari we have some time to relax by the pool. After lunch we head out on our second safari. In the afternoons, we will do the day’s second safari. Together with Ben, we will develop our photography skills and knowledge of the threatened ecosystem we find ourselves in. For those interested in birds, our local guide will share his knowledge of the park’s rich birdlife. Just as we see the sun setting, we leave the park and return to the lodge where dinner, image editing, and analysis of the day’s harvest await. After some fantastic days in Bandhavgarh, Ben will announce “The Journey’s Image” on the last evening, which automatically advances to the final in our “Image of the Year 2026” competition.
