ICELAND
ICELAND
Iceland boasts spouting geysers, hot springs, beautiful glaciers, mighty volcanoes, and thundering waterfalls. Iceland’s wild and extraordinary natural features make the country a major tourist attraction and a dream come true for any landscape photographer. The reason for this is Iceland’s location right above the mid-Atlantic ridge, a long fracture zone in the ocean where glowing lava easily emerges from deep inside the earth. In Iceland, there are no less than 30 active volcanoes and several hundred that are no longer active. These have created hot springs where the water is heated by the volcanic activity from underneath the Earth’s surface. Many of Iceland’s volcanoes are very active, and from time to time have large and devastating eruptions. Together with a huge number of glaciers and many spectacular waterfalls, this makes Iceland not only beautiful but thrilling and fascinating as well. In short, Iceland may be the best country in Europe for a landscape photographer.
TOUR ITINERARY
TOUR ITINERARY
TOUR ITINERARY – SEPTEMBER 3-8, 2022
DAY 1, – WELCOME TO ICELAND. GRINDAVIK
You will arrive at the airport of Keflavik in the afternoon, and we will be greeted by Jeremy and a host from Zoom Photo Tours. From the airport, we will go to our hotel in Grindavik and just in a short while we will see the spectacular landscape. After checking in at our hotel we will be given an inspiring lecture by Jeremy, who will show us photos from some of the locations we will be visiting during our trip as well as giving us tips and advice on how to take photos in various conditions and at different times during the day. Filled with inspiration we will go out for a first glance of the Icelandic landscape, which the following days will challenge and inspire us to come back home as better photographers. Among other things, we will capture the turquoise-blue water together with the black lava that has shaped beautiful lagoons in the harsh landscape. Also, we will take photographs of the rock stacks along the coast at sunset. We will conclude our day with a welcome dinner. Accommodation at the Geo Hotel in Grindavik. (D)
DAY 2, – GRINDAVIK TO VIK
After the morning’s photography of the dramatic coastal landscape, which the night before offered plenty of opportunities for photos, we will continue our photography adventure to the spectacular landscapes on the south coast. Today we are heading towards the small village of Vik. We will make several photography stops along the way among dramatic ravines and at two of Iceland’s very well-known and magnificent waterfalls, Seljalandsfoss waterfall and Skogafoss waterfall. After checking into our hotel, we will explore the rock formations and lava beaches outside Vik. Here you will see, among other things, fantasy-like rock formations sticking out of the water and great photo opportunities from the hills over the vast lava beaches. As the sun sets, we will point our cameras at the horizon to watch the dramatic cliffs out in the water form silhouettes against the orange sky. Accommodation at the Hotel Katla in Vik. (B, L, D)
DAY 3, – THE ATLANTIC COAST AND JÖKULSÁRLÓN
After a morning along the wild Atlantic coast and its black lava sand, we will leave Vik for another day filled with photography and inspiring guidance by Jeremy. Today’s highlight will be the glacier lagoon Jökulsárlón with its black lava beach. The large blocks of ice on the beach are not only a beautiful contrast to the black sand but also an excellent foreground to the beautiful and dramatic surroundings. During our sessions out in the field, we will stop along the way and Jeremy will be hands-on when showing us his approach to creating images. During the afternoon at sunset, we will make use of the soft twilight, which makes the surroundings even more beautiful. 3 overnight stays at the Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon near Skaftafell. (B, L, D)
DAY 4, – JÖKULSÁRLÓN AND VESTRAHORN
We start our day by exploring the surroundings near Jökulsárlón. Owing to the weather, the landscape is continuously changing as the waves wash up ever new blocks of ice on the beach. By using slow shutter speeds we get the opportunity to create powerful images where the water almost blurs to show the beautiful rocks in contrast. The afternoon will be spent at Westerhorn with its vast plains covered by undulating lava sand that extends towards the lonely mountains on the horizon, forming a paradise-like area to the landscape photographer. If we are lucky some parts of the area will be covered by water, so we get the opportunity to photograph the incredible mountains reflected in the water’s surface. (B, L, D)
DAY 5, – FJALLSARLON AND SVARTIFOSS
Today we will be spent taking pictures of the glaciers. In the early morning light, we will, among other things, visit the beautiful glacier lake at the Fjallsarlon glacier and go hiking to the Svartifoss waterfall. Surrounded by the lush landscape, this is perhaps one of Iceland’s most photogenic waterfalls. Standing at the bottom, we are surrounded by dramatic cliff faces of tall black basalt columns, that are named the Black Falls waterfall. We will make use of the fading evening light, and perhaps we will have a last visit to Jökulsárlón, before going back to the hotel with no space left on our memory cards. Here we will look at today’s pictures and get feedback from Jeremy. We will end the day with dinner. (B, L, D)
DAY 6, – BACK TO KEFLAVIK
After breakfast we check out from the hotel and head towards Keflavik airport for further transport home on our own. On the way to the airport we will stop at a roadside restaurant for lunch. (B)
PLEASE NOTE! Due to the weather in Iceland, the program can be revised to provide the best possible photo opportunities.
