For more than four decades I have worked on every continent. I have had the privilege of experiencing some of the world’s most fascinating landscapes, but Iceland is one of the places I keep returning to. Here, fire and ice meet in a landscape shaped by glaciers, volcanoes, lava fields, geysers, hot springs and mighty waterfalls. The light and the weather change constantly, making every day unique.
I have worked in Iceland many times, including for National Geographic, and every trip has deepened my relationship with this extraordinary place. On this trip we visit some of the environments that have inspired me the most. It is not just about photographing the landscape, but about experiencing it and developing your own way of seeing it.

Mattias Klum, the world-renowned National Geographic photographer, has visited Iceland many times to capture the island’s unique and dramatic landscapes. His images testify to a deep understanding of nature’s rhythms, the shifting light and the powerful contrasts that define this volcanic island. On this trip, Mattias takes you to some of his absolute favorite places to photograph everything from deep, dramatic valleys to thundering waterfalls and dormant volcanoes – where every location carries its own story.
During the trip we visit several of Iceland’s most spectacular and photogenic areas, not least around Landmannalaugar – one of the country’s most fascinating natural areas. Here an almost unreal landscape unfolds, where the colorful rhyolite mountains shift in tones of red, orange, yellow, green and blue-gray. The light constantly transforms the scene, creating new expressions from one moment to the next and making the area an inexhaustible source of creative image-making.
We also visit Þjórsárdalur, a valley where the forces of nature feel close and ever-present. Here we encounter the magnificent waterfall Háifoss, where the river Fossá throws itself over high cliff edges and disappears into a dramatic gorge. The landscape is framed by dark lava walls that rise like monuments to Iceland’s volcanic origins, creating an almost surreal backdrop. In the same area lies Gjáin – an enchanting oasis that feels like something out of a fairy tale. Amid the black lava, a world of soft mosses, murmuring brooks and small waterfalls opens up, spilling into clear, still pools. The light, the colors and the winding ravines make this a paradise for nature photographers, where every angle offers a new picture.
Along the south coast we photograph some of Iceland’s most iconic settings. We visit the mighty glacier lagoon Jökulsárlón, where icebergs in shifting hues drift silently through the cold water. Right next to it lies the black lava beach, where blocks of ice wash ashore and glitter like crystals against the dark sand. We also explore Veiðivötn, a vast volcanic area whose lakes and wetlands mirror the sky, while Eldhraun – the world’s largest contiguous lava field, blanketed in thick, soft moss – is also on the program.

Iceland is a country where the forces of nature constantly make themselves felt – a landscape shaped by fire and ice in a dramatic and unique combination. Here, spouting geysers shoot boiling water high into the air, and hot springs tempt visitors to bathe in the mineral-rich water in the midst of an otherwise barren, raw landscape. Vast glaciers spread out like frozen seas across the country, while mighty volcanoes rise from the ground as a reminder of the constant activity going on beneath the Earth’s surface. From high cliffs, magnificent waterfalls plunge into deep ravines, creating a sense of both power and stillness at the same time. This wild and distinctive nature is a true dream for landscape photographers. The light, the contrasts and the ever-shifting weather conditions make every view feel alive and unique. The reason for this spectacular nature is that Iceland sits directly on top of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge – an enormous rift zone in the Earth’s crust where the tectonic plates are slowly drifting apart. Through these fissures, glowing lava can rise relatively easily from the Earth’s interior, and this has shaped the island over millions of years. Iceland has no fewer than some thirty active volcanoes, as well as several hundred that are now dormant. This intense geological activity has, among other things, given rise to the many hot springs, where water is heated deep underground and then seeps up to the surface. It is also this force that drives the spectacular geysers, a phenomenon rare in the world but one for which Iceland is particularly famous. Many of Iceland’s volcanoes are still active and erupt at regular intervals, sometimes with powerful and devastating results. It is precisely this combination of active volcanoes, massive glaciers and countless waterfalls that makes Iceland truly unique.

AUGUST 21-26, 2027
Throughout the trip, Mattias Klum will be available for photographic advice and tips, as well as for help with image editing and image critique. Mattias will also give talks and share his approach to photography. Exact times for these sessions will be decided depending on the weather. Mattias will also hand out photo assignments to challenge you to think creatively and see the potential for different kinds of images. The assignments will be presented during the trip so that everyone gets to see each other’s images, giving you the chance to see how the other participants tackled the task.

DAY 1, (21/8) – WELCOME TO ICELAND
Around lunchtime we gather at Keflavík Airport, where we are welcomed by Mattias Klum and Zoom Photo Tours host Daniel Iglesias. Our photographic adventure in Iceland’s magnificent nature now begins.
The first stop is the fairy-tale Gjáin, a verdant ravine with small waterfalls and murmuring brooks. Here we have time to photograph and experiment with different shutter speeds to capture the movement of the water in different ways. We then continue to Háifoss, a mighty waterfall plunging into a deep gorge. Under guidance, we work on composition and framing to capture the dramatic landscape.
The day ends with check-in at Highland Center Hrauneyjar, where we stay for two nights. In the evening, a shared welcome dinner awaits, along with time to sum up the day’s impressions. (D)
DAY 2, (22/8) – LANDMANNALAUGAR
Today is devoted to a visit to Landmannalaugar in the Fjallabak Nature Reserve, where a dramatic landscape opens up in colorful mountains in shades of gray, orange, yellow and green.
We hike through the lava field to the fumaroles at the foot of the volcano Brennisteinsalda. Here it feels as though we have stepped into another world, where steam rises straight out of the ground and sweeps across the barren, rocky landscape. Landmannalaugar is considered one of Iceland’s most beautiful places and is a true paradise for landscape photographers. Before heading back to our hotel, we take the opportunity to bathe in the hot springs. A lovely way to end the day at Landmannalaugar.
In the evening we hold an image review with constructive critique and feedback from Mattias Klum. (B, L, D)
DAY 3, (23/8) – WATERFALLS AND JÖKULSARLON
After breakfast we check out of the hotel and continue our journey along Iceland’s dramatic south coast. Along the way we stop at some of the country’s most iconic waterfalls.
The first stop is Seljalandsfoss, where we also visit the nearby Gljúfrafoss. Here we get a unique photographic experience inside a hidden grotto, where we can capture the water plunging down just outside the opening high above us. We then continue to the mighty Skógafoss, one of Iceland’s best-known waterfalls, where masses of water thunder down from a high cliff edge in a powerful cascade.
In the afternoon we arrive at Guesthouse Gerdi, where we check in for two nights. After an early dinner we head out to Jökulsárlón for evening photography.
Here we encounter a spectacular glacier lagoon filled with icebergs that have broken away from Breiðamerkurjökull. Through a short channel to the sea, smaller blocks of ice are carried out toward the beach, where they wash up on the black lava sand and glitter like crystals in the late light. The place is nothing short of iconic – a dramatic contrast between ice, black sand and sea. After a magical evening we return to the hotel for the night. (B, L, D)
DAY 4, (24/8) – FJALLSARLÓN AND MULAGLJUFUR CANYON
After an early breakfast we meet the first light of sunrise at Fjallsárlón – a tranquil, almost unreally beautiful glacier lagoon with gigantic icebergs calved from the mighty Fjallsjökull glacier. Here the glacier’s icefall descends dramatically toward the water, and the soft morning light creates a magical atmosphere that makes the place a dream for photographers.
As the light slowly changes, we continue on to the hidden gem Múlagljúfur. Here a dramatic canyon cuts deep through the landscape, with steep, green-clad cliff faces rising on both sides and a winding glacial river running along the valley floor. Several waterfalls tumble into the depths along the canyon walls, and the tall, slender Hangandifoss stands out as one of the most striking sights in the area. From the heights, magnificent panoramas then open up toward the sea and the surrounding glaciers, often framed by veils of mist and an ever-shifting light that lends the landscape an almost unreal quality. DAY 5, (25/8) – FJAÐRÁRGLJÚFUR, REYNISFJARA, DYRHÓLAEY
After an early breakfast and check-out, we begin the day at the picturesque canyon Fjaðrárgljúfur, where we have the chance to photograph the waterfall and the dramatic, moss-covered cliffs dropping steeply to the river far below. The landscape changes drastically as we drive east along the coast through the world’s largest lava field, Eldhraun, formed during the Laki eruption of 1783-84. Here we photograph the seemingly endless moss-clad lava stretching out toward the mountains on the horizon.
We continue the day with a photo session among cliffs, steep precipices and a miles-long lava beach at Dyrhólaey – perfect subjects for captivating landscape images. We then check in at Hotel Dyrholaey in Vík. In the evening we gather for a farewell dinner. (B, L, D)
DAY 6, (26/8) – JOURNEY HOME
After breakfast we continue toward Keflavík. Along the way we make a stop at the Sólheimasandur wreck, an American airplane abandoned on a black sand beach on the south coast. On 24 November 1973, a Douglas Super DC-3 of the US Navy made an emergency landing on the beach at Sólheimasandur. The plane had run out of fuel. Everyone on board (seven people) survived and walked away unharmed. The wreck was never salvaged but was left on the beach, where it slowly rusts in the wind. The fuselage remains, but the wings and tail are gone. The plane makes a fascinating subject where it lies in the black lava sand, with the barren, moon-like surroundings as a backdrop.
We then continue to Keflavík Airport, where the tour ends. Return journey on your own. (B)

Once you are back home and have had time to go through your images from the trip, you will have the opportunity to send your best pictures to Mattias, who will call a meeting where the images are reviewed and commented on. Experience and photograph Iceland from above on an exciting helicopter tour. During the flight you soar over some of the country’s most iconic locations, where every view offers a new breathtaking experience and plenty of photo opportunities. To make the tour even more photography-friendly, the side doors will be removed, providing fantastic photographic possibilities.
We fly over Þingvellir National Park with its dramatic rift valleys, before continuing over the bubbling, steaming landscape of the Geysir Geothermal Area, where boiling water erupts from the ground in powerful bursts. Then the colorful geothermal expanses of the Landmannalaugar Geothermal Area open up, where nature shifts in shades of red, yellow and green.
The journey takes us onward over the lush, dramatic valley of Þórsmörk, surrounded by mighty mountains and glaciers. You will also get an impressive view of Eyjafjallajökull, the famous glacier volcano that reminds us of nature’s enormous power.
The tour continues over the thundering Gullfoss and the tall, magnificent Háifoss, where masses of water hurl themselves into deep ravines.
The total duration of the tour is approximately 3–3.5 hours. Of this, 2–2.5 hours consist of helicopter flying, plus two landings in scenic locations to photograph landscapes that cannot be reached by road.

Experience and photograph Iceland from above on an exciting helicopter tour. During the flight you soar over some of the country’s most iconic locations, where every view offers a new breathtaking experience and plenty of photo opportunities. To make the tour even more photography-friendly, the side doors will be removed, providing fantastic photographic possibilities.
We fly over Þingvellir National Park with its dramatic rift valleys, before continuing over the bubbling, steaming landscape of the Geysir Geothermal Area, where boiling water erupts from the ground in powerful bursts. Then the colorful geothermal expanses of the Landmannalaugar Geothermal Area open up, where nature shifts in shades of red, yellow and green.
The journey takes us onward over the lush, dramatic valley of Þórsmörk, surrounded by mighty mountains and glaciers. You will also get an impressive view of Eyjafjallajökull, the famous glacier volcano that reminds us of nature’s enormous power.
The Landmannalaugar area is famous for its natural beauty and many different geological elements. The mountains in the surrounding region display a variation of colors.[/caption]
The tour continues over the thundering Gullfoss and the tall, magnificent Háifoss, where masses of water hurl themselves into deep ravines.
The total duration of the tour is approximately 3–3.5 hours. Of this, 2–2.5 hours consist of helicopter flying, plus two landings in scenic locations to photograph landscapes that cannot be reached by road.
This is an unforgettable experience, giving you the opportunity to photograph Iceland’s most spectacular landscapes from an entirely new perspective, under the guidance of Mattias Klum.

TRANSPORT
You arrange your own flights to Iceland. You should be at Keflavík Airport at around 11:00 on August 21. The return journey can take place from 14:00 on 26/8.
If you choose the helicopter add-on, the return journey can take place after 16:00 on August 27.
