FAROE ISLANDS – DRAMATIC & BEAUTIFUL

WITH PHOTOGRAPHER SERKAN GÜNES

The Faroe Islands are where the forces of nature converge in towering cliffs, powerful waterfalls, and lush green meadows. Join me in capturing the raw beauty and magic of the Faroe Islands

Serkan Günes

Imagine a mysterious and dramatic landscape where the forces of nature reign, bringing to life the most spectacular views. Deep in the heart of the North Atlantic, with its mighty waves, the Faroe Islands unfold as an irresistible landscape of natural beauty and wildness. Breathtaking waterfalls such as Bøsdalafossur and Fossá cascade down moss-covered mountains, while green meadows and gently rolling hills provide a mesmerizing contrast to the dramatic scenery.

On this journey, you will have the opportunity to experience and photograph this untamed beauty under the guidance of Serkan Günes, one of Sweden’s most renowned landscape photographers. Serkan will be with you throughout the entire trip, sharing his expertise and knowledge through photography activities and inspiring lectures.

You will hike the Faroe Islands’ highest mountain, Slættaratindur, and visit some of the most iconic locations, while also discovering hidden gems known only to the locals. Among the highlights is the chance to trek to the world-famous Kallur Lighthouse, offering magnificent views, and visit the picturesque village of Bøur with its grass-covered rooftops. Here, you will also have the opportunity to photograph dramatic coastlines, towering cliffs, and the ever-changing skies that define this archipelago.

We will also visit the northernmost village of the Faroe Islands, a place that feels like a remote, forgotten world – a perfect spot to capture the raw and untouched landscape. During the trip, we will photograph across 5-6 of the Faroe Islands’ 18 islands, offering a diverse range of photographic opportunities. Each location and each island has something unique to offer – from dramatic cliffs to serene bays and lush valleys.

This is a journey for those who seek more than just beautiful images – it is a chance to capture the essence of one of Europe’s most magical and unexplored landscapes, guided and inspired by one of the best in the field, Serkan Günes.

THE FAROE ISLANDS

THE FAROE ISLANDS

In the North Atlantic, approximately 400 km north of Scotland, between Greenland and Denmark, lie the 18 islands that together form the Faroe Islands. The Faroe Islands, discovered by Irish monks as early as the 6th century, belong to Denmark but have self-governance, which means they have a local parliament and their own government, although foreign and defense policies are managed from Copenhagen.

On the main island of Streymoy lies the capital, Tórshavn, where around 20,000 of the Faroe Islands’ 48,000 inhabitants live. The primary source of income for the locals comes from fishing, but tourism also employs many, as the islands’ nature and wildlife attract numerous visitors.

The landscape of the Faroe Islands is dramatic, with steep cliffs plunging directly into the North Atlantic, green meadows stretching across the rugged terrain, and towering mountains. This is a landscape that is perfect for a landscape photographer.

The Faroe Islands are home to a rich birdlife, including puffins, kittiwakes, and gannets. In addition to birds, whales and seals can also be spotted, offering excellent photography opportunities.

The weather in the Faroe Islands can change rapidly, with rain and fog quickly giving way to bright sunshine. The daytime temperature in August ranges between 10-13°C.

VAGAR

Vágar is the third largest island in the Faroe Islands, after Streymoy and Eysturoy, and one of the westernmost of the 18 islands. It is also home to the Faroe Islands’ only airport, making it the starting point of our adventure. On Vágar, we find Sørvágsvatn, the archipelago’s largest lake, and the stunning Bøsdalafossur waterfall, which cascades down steep cliffs into the North Atlantic—both perfect locations for landscape photography. We will also visit the village of Gásadalur, set in a dramatic landscape with a steep coastline plunging straight into the Atlantic Ocean. Combined with a powerful waterfall, this makes for an exciting subject for landscape photographers.

STREYMOY

Streymoy is the largest of the Faroe Islands and home to the majority of the archipelago’s population. It is also where the capital, Tórshavn, is located. Streymoy’s elongated landscape, like the other islands we visit, is marked by dramatic and breathtaking scenery, with deep ravines and towering cliffs. During our visit, we will photograph Fossá, which, at 140 meters, is the highest waterfall in the Faroe Islands. The island is also home to the archipelago’s oldest settlements, with archaeological remains dating back to the Viking Age. We will visit the small, idyllic village of Saksun, which, with its 14 inhabitants, is beautifully surrounded by towering mountains and cascading waterfalls.

EYSTUROY

Eysturoy is connected to Streymoy by a bridge, sometimes referred to as the only bridge in the North Atlantic. During our visit to Eysturoy, we will hike to the summit of Slættaratindur, the highest mountain in the Faroe Islands. From its peak, at 882 meters, we will be rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view of all the islands, offering fantastic opportunities for stunning landscape photography. We will also explore several of Eysturoy’s picturesque and beautifully situated villages, including Gjógv, which is located at the edge of a water-filled gorge. Nearby, we will find Ambadalur, where the towering 188-meter-high sea stack, Búgvin, rises from the ocean—a perfect subject for our photography.
