Join me on a journey to the Masai Mara, where we will focus on capturing spectacular action shots of predators hunting the large numbers of calves born every November.
Tom Dyring
November is an action-packed month in the Masai Mara, brimming with opportunities for stunning action photography.
This is when the savannah’s baby boom explodes, setting the entire ecosystem in motion. Countless calves are born, particularly among Thomson’s gazelles, impalas, and topis, prompting predators to be in a constant state of alert. The big cats, including cheetahs, lions, and leopards, seize this brief vulnerable moment when the newborns have yet to grow swift enough, making November a time filled with drama, movement, and intense encounters.
Join Tom Dyring in the heart of Kenya’s Masai Mara during this exhilarating season. The short rains of November create a vibrant landscape, lush and awash with shifting light. Birds return from the south, the sky plays with dramatic contrasts, and the potential for unique photography opportunities is endless.
But the highlight? Without a doubt, it is the baby boom, a spectacle of life, survival, and movement. We travel in specially designed private photo vehicles tailored for photographers, allowing you the freedom to explore angles and compositions that are otherwise impossible. You will share the vehicle with other photography enthusiasts, and the pace will adapt to the light, wildlife, and creative possibilities. To make the most of every magical moment on the savannah, we provide both breakfast and lunch on the go, resulting in safaris that stretch from dawn until dusk, lasting up to 12 to 13 hours each day.

MASAI MARA
MASAI MARA
Located in the southwest of Kenya, bordering the Serengeti, the Maasai Mara is the country’s most iconic and wildlife-rich national park. Its vast, undulating grasslands, shaped by the Mara and Talek rivers, create a landscape that seems lifted from a nature documentary, where the light dances across the savannah and the drama of life unfolds daily. Here, Africa’s largest lion prides roam freely, and mighty herds of elephants meander through the terrain. You might catch a glimpse of leopards stealthily moving in the shadows or cheetahs surveying the grass, poised to hunt. From your jeep, you can also encounter inquisitive giraffes, lively gazelles, and powerful antelopes. Hyenas and jackals constantly circle the periphery, while baboons gather in groups among the trees. In the rivers lie crocodiles and hippos, and along the water’s edge, the inhabitants of the savannah gather to drink, offering spectacular opportunities for action-filled photography.

PHOTO JEEPS
Our vehicles are four-wheel drive Toyota Land Cruiser jeeps modified for photography expeditions. These spacious vehicles seat eight—with six “window seats” But we will book no more than five in each Jeep to offer the best photo opportunities.
OUR vehicles have large open sides, a low” photo slot”, and the roof can be folded up if you want to stand up to photograph. These modifications provide extraordinary, rarely available perspectives that will allow you to capture exceptional, distinctive images. we can remove seats, which makes it possible to sit or lie on hick rubber mats covering the floor to photograph animals at eye level. The car is also outfitted with small and large bean bags and six 230-volt electrical outlets to charge batteries for cameras and computers. Given the design of the Jeep, it is also easy to use a tripod, monopod, and bean bags.
FULL-DAY GAME DRIVE
Unlike most safari trips, we will embark on full-day safaris each day, allowing us to explore the park from before sunrise until after sunset. This approach ensures that you get the absolute most out of your photographic week in the Masai Mara. Full-day safaris provide significantly more time to photograph wildlife, as we don’t return to the lodge for lunch. Instead, we bring breakfast and lunch with us, allowing us to stay with the animals throughout the day and capture those magical moments whenever they happen — whether in the early morning light, midday action, or golden-hour calm. Meals are enjoyed out on the savanna, surrounded by the sights and sounds of the wild.
